If you operate a cold storage or temperature-controlled facility, maintaining the right temperature is a priority.

However, it’s not just about the refrigeration system - it’s also about how goods enter and leave the building.

Every time a vehicle docks and the loading bay door opens, cold air can escape and warmer air can enter. This can increase energy consumption and make it more difficult to maintain consistent temperatures.

So what should you consider when designing a cold storage loading dock, and what solutions are available to help improve thermal performance?

Why is the loading dock important in cold storage?

Loading docks provide a bridge between the warehouse and vehicles, yet in cold storage facilities they must also help maintain the temperature inside the building. This can be challenging.

Opening a loading bay door allows conditioned air to escape and warmer outside air to enter. The more frequently this happens, the harder it becomes to maintain the required temperature.

This is particularly important in chilled and frozen facilities, where temperature fluctuations can affect product quality, equipment and working conditions.

What should be considered when designing a cold storage loading dock?

There are several ways to improve the thermal performance of a loading bay.

It’s about looking at the complete loading bay rather than focusing on one piece of equipment - the door, dock leveller, dock shelter and surrounding structure all have a part to play.

Key considerations include:

  • Door insulation: Insulated overhead sectional doors help maintain the required temperature.
  • Dock shelters: Inflatable dock shelters help seal the gap around the vehicle.
  • Dock leveller insulation: Insulating the underside of the dock leveller helps maintain consistent temperatures.
  • Door design: Peep-hole windows provide visibility whilst helping maintain thermal performance.
  • Loading bay layout: Positioning the door in front of the dock leveller helps prevent solar heat gain to the leveller.

The result is a loading bay that helps maintain the required temperature inside the building.

What cold storage loading dock solutions are available?

There are three main approaches to consider: a standard insulated loading bay, a specialist loading bay with a T-shaped door, and an external dock house.

1. Standard insulated loading bay

A standard loading bay can be adapted for cold storage by paying particular attention to insulation and sealing. This can include:

Dock leveller insulation can include sprayed PUR foam beneath the platform or insulated panels to fully encase the dock leveller. This helps reduce heat transfer through the leveller whilst also providing an element of sound insulation.

An inflatable dock shelter then helps seal the vehicle to the building when loading takes place.

In other words, a conventional loading bay can provide good thermal performance when the individual components are selected and specified with cold storage in mind.

2. T-shaped door and Stepped Frame loading bay

Where improved temperature control is particularly important, the door can be positioned in front of the dock leveller rather than behind it.

This is where the Stertil Stepped Frame dock system can be used.

The Stepped Frame arrangement allows an insulated sectional door to close in front of the dock leveller. The vehicle can then dock with the sectional door closed. Once the vehicle is in position, the dock shelter is activated before the sectional door is opened.

Positioning the door in front of the leveller also helps prevent solar heat gain to the front of the leveller.

The door itself is T-shaped. At dock level, it is the normal width of the loading bay, whilst the narrower section closes across the front of the dock leveller. The stepped frame incorporates pockets on either side of the leveller to allow the door to operate effectively.

Because the door is positioned in front of the leveller, a telescopic lip is required to bridge the additional distance and reach the docking vehicle.

The result is a specialist cold storage loading dock that helps maintain a more consistent temperature whilst allowing the vehicle to be docked before the sectional door is opened.

3. Dock houses and dock pods

Dock houses (sometimes called dock pods) move the loading bay outside the main building.

Positioning the dock leveller, shelter and associated loading equipment externally, creates a dedicated loading area between the vehicle and warehouse.

This can be particularly useful for cold storage facilities where maximising internal space and keeping the loading area outside the temperature-controlled space are important considerations.

Because the loading bay is positioned outside the main building, dock houses can be particularly useful when space inside the cold store is limited or needs to be maximised.

Which cold storage loading dock is right for your facility?

There isn't one solution that suits every cold storage application.

The right approach will depend on the required operating temperature, number of vehicle movements, building design, available space and level of thermal performance required.

For some facilities, a well-insulated standard loading bay may provide the right balance of performance and practicality. Where maintaining temperature is particularly important, a Stepped Frame arrangement with a T-shaped door can provide improved temperature control.

A dock house or dock pod may also be worth considering where keeping the loading area outside the temperature-controlled space and maximising internal space are priorities.

Designing an effective cold storage loading dock

Cold storage loading docks need to balance thermal performance with safe and efficient vehicle loading.
